The Monday night concert in St. Attracta's school, July 10th 2017, 8:00pm, pays tribute to local musicians and teachers who have contributed to the South Sligo Music scene and the school over the years.
This year, this Tribute Concert will honour John McHugh from Foxford. John’s father, Kevin inherited music from his father and uncles and his mother. John began playing the banjo and subsequently took up the fiddle and has become well-known nationally as a player and teacher. John has taught at the South Sligo Summer School from it's early days. In these later years he has also been providing technical support at Concerts and Ceilis. We are pleased to honour John McHugh at the Monday night concert this year as a tribute to the enormous contribution he has made to the school over the years both as a musician, tutor and sound engineer.
The 2016 Monday Night Concert honoured our two guitar tutors, Shane McGowan and Seamie O'Dowd. Shane who is from "the foot of Knocknashee" and Seamie from Sligo have been teaching traditional guitar at the school for many years. They were joined on stage by family and friends, including; Harry McGowan, Fergus McGowan, Fr. James McDonagh, Marion Hanley, Karen McKim, Chris Stapelton, Stephen O'Dowd, Junior Davey and Leonard Barry and more.
The packed house was treated to an excellent evening of traditional music on Guitar, Flute, Uilleann pipes, fiddle, bodhran, bones and some excellent songing by Harry, Fergus, Marion and Karen. We were also treated to a glimpse of the range of Seamie and Shane mastery of the guitar when they snuck in some Django Reinhardt "just for a bit of fun".
The evening ended with a presentation to the two lads by committee member Rita Flannery and a grand finale with everyone on stage. A truly memorable evening.
